It's the whole reason I started this venture

  • Open a folder, play a song
  • 250ms transition in or out
    • reverse 500ms on pause
  • categories
  • do-not-play tags / blacklists (Christmas Music, line dances)
  • seasonal tags (play more frequently approaching my birthday, anniversary, christmas, etc)
  • do-not-mix categories (no random transition between classical and hard metal)
  • throwback thursday (only play songs I've listened to before, but not in a while)
  • discovery (only play songs I haven't heard)
  • second chance tuesday (throw in songs I haven't rejected 3 times)
  • social club tagging (line dance, foxtrot, waltz, blue)
  • history
    • meta (song, artist)
    • physical location
    • datetime
    • media location (url / server / friend)
  • chat (suggest links to add)
  • channel (chat + links)
  • auto-play same/similar genre
  • artist location (city)

According to the "Power of Habit" by Charles Dunhigg, people (at large) reject new songs when they first here them, unless they seek out the unknown. In music, we want what is known. So what the radio stations mentioned in the book found to be most successful with getting people to love new songs was to mix them in with old hits. Familiarity, yet variety. Not sure how to implement that in a music app, but I love it in my music.

Maybe have an option to play a random song in your playlist of favorites. Especially if there was a way to determine if a song is similar in sound to the others (that could be crowdsourced).
